Who is this course for?
An Oral Health Educator has an important and valuable role within a dental practice to promote good oral health care and work with patients to help prevent oral disease.
The NEBDN Certificate in Oral Health Education is specifically designed to equip a Dental Nurse wishing to develop professionally to become an oral health educator, with the knowledge and skills required to be able to effectively deliver oral health care messages, educate various patient groups and have the ability to adapt information and communication to the specific needs of the patient.
The Oral Health Education course is for Registered Dental Nurses who wish to further their knowledge and specialise in Oral Health Education, enabling them to take a more active role in the promotion of Oral Health.
What does the course include?
Record of Competence (RoC)
When registering for the qualification, the learner must have access to carry out practical skills with a range of patient types offering preventative oral health advice for a range of oral diseases.
The first 6 months of the course is focused on completion of the RoC to enable students sit the exam when planned. Please note, failure to complete the RoC will result in the course requiring to be extended which will incur a defer fee.
- The Record of Competence is in three parts:
- Part A: Practical Competence Assessment Sheets (PCAS)
- Part B: Case Study
- Part C: Supplementary Outcomes (SO)
Part A - Practical Competence Assessment Sheets (PCAS):
Learners will complete the PCAS to provide evidence of their involvement in the oral health care of 7 individuals covering preventative advice for a range or oral health diseases. The setting should normally be within the learners own place of work but may be elsewhere if appropriate to the particular patient group.
Part B: Case Study
Learners will choose one patient for the production of a detailed case study.
Part C: Supplementary Outcomes (SO)
Learners will complete each of the supplementary outcomes to a level deemed satisfactory by Dentrain Professionals Ltd. The supplementary outcomes will allow the learners to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of areas of the syllabus in which they may not be able to gain clinical experience or which it may not be possible to assess by other means.
Students will be provided with a deadline to complete the RoC although this is always 3-4 months prior to sitting the exam. Upon completion of the RoC, this will go through an internal quality assurance process before being submitted to the NEBDN in preparation for the exam being booked.
Learning & Revision
Learners are not expected to attend our centre as this is a correspondence course which is learner led. Learners are provided with a number of different resources for learning material and are expected to carry out learning each week making their way through the materials provided with a calendar of dates to follow. The learning material provided is evidence based material which covers topics set out in the NEBDN syllabus and provides underpinning knowledge and understanding to help support practical skills along with preparation for the examination.
Mock exams are provided upon completion of the RoC and once learning from other material has been carried out. Mock exams help prepare further for revision for the examination.
Approximately 1 month prior to the expected examination date, the Tutor will arrange oral mock exams. These oral mocks will include random testing across the syllabus. Although this sounds daunting, this is a varied form of revision with excellent feedback from previous learners who have gone on to successfully pass the examination.
About the Examination
This is a 90-minute written examination composed of two sections:
- Part A – 45 multiple choice questions (MCQ)
- Part B – 30 extended matching questions (EMQ)
Examinations are held twice a year in March and September.
In order to be awarded this qualification, the learner must:
- Complete and satisfy the requirements of the RoC
- Pass the examination
